Oldbury Court is a wonderful and diverse estate, combining stunning woodland and riverside paths with historic parkland and excellent children’s play facilities. It is a much-loved estate offering a real escape from the city, yet the secrets of Oldbury Court are hidden away!
The main estate sits with fantastic views over the river Frome – there are several different pathways to take along the river and routes are well signed. The valley supports a stunning and ancient natural habitat, which is bursting with wildlife.
How to get there...
Located approximately four miles north east of Bristol’s city centre, there are two car parks offering easy entrance to the site. Oldbury Court car park is off Oldbury Court Road in Fishponds and Snuff Mills car park is at the end of River View in Stapleton. The estate is open from 8 am to dusk and admission is free.
History
The estate house no longer exists at Oldbury Court, but the site is still known by many as ‘Vassalls’, after the last family who lived here. With its winding paths, drives and scenic river views, the estate was designed by Humphry Repton to maximise enjoyment of the natural environment. Children
Kids will love the playground near Oldbury Court car park – it’s one of the best in the Bristol area. It has a great range of facilities, which will provide hours of entertainment for toddlers right up to children of 11 or 12. There are also plenty of ideal picnic spots and ice cream vans in the summer months as well as close-by toilet facilities.
Walking
The estate lends itself to walking and exploration. There is a great network of pathways throughout the estate with plenty of flat tarmac paths near to both car parks, which are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Links to other public footpaths from the estate are good with a footpath that follows the Frome to Frenchay as part of the Community Forest Path and part of the Frome Valley walkway which runs out to Eastville Park. There is also an orienteering path and a short horse trail around the estate.
