River Avon Trail
The 23 mile River Avon Trail is a scenic riverside path between Pill Harbour and Bath. The section from Pill to Hanham can be cycled although this may be treated as two separate short excursions from Bristol as both towns are on opposite sides of the City.
The 7 mile trip between Bristol and Pill Harbour passes through places of historical and natural interest. These include Brunel’s famous Clifton Suspension Bridge, the impressive Avon Gorge, Leigh Woods and Pill Harbour - where local river pilots departed to guide large ships up the treacherous Avon to the port of Bristol.
The 5 miles from Bristol to Hanham Weir also provide a pleasant riverside excursion, passing the new Avon Valley Woodlands Local Nature Reserve. The pubs at Hanham Weir provide a welcome refreshment stop where you can have food and drink by the river and in summer you can take the ferry across the river to Beese’s Tea Gardens
Access
The Trail is nearly all level and on good surfaces although it may be muddy in one or two places after wet weather. The path is off-road except for a couple of short sections in the centre of Bristol. You can quite easily link up with the Bristol and Bath Railway Path from the River Avon Trail at Hanham Weir to continue along the Avon Valley to Bath.
How to get onto the route
There are numerous places to get onto the Trail including Pill Harbour, Princes Wharf – Bristol, Castle Park - Bristol, Conham and Hanham Weir.
