Ridgewood

Ridge Wood is situated between Yate and Chipping Sodbury in South Gloucestershire and as the name implies, it follows a limestone ridge northwards to Wickwar.

The Wood is managed by South Gloucestershire Council who plan to designate it as a Local Nature Reserve in 2005. There has been a lot of work undertaken recently to improve access to the site and provide habitats for woodland birds, mammals and flowers.

Spring is the best time to see the colourful native woodland flowers such as bluebells, anemones, campion, stitchwort and moschatel.

The site is rich in history with evidence of Iron Age and Roman activities in the area. More recently it included a mansion known as Ridge House, which has since been demolished to allow for the extension of the nearby quarry. Ridge House introduced some unusual tree species in the woodland, in particular the Giant Sequoias from the US in the late 19th century, and several walnut trees that remain from an old avenue to Ridge House.

Access

The new paths provide easy access for walkers and people with pushchairs and wheelchairs.

How to get there...
