Wood School

Wood School is a 3 year project funded by the Heritage lottery Fund to engage schools and communities with their local woodland heritage. Wood School provides an innovative and creative programme of activity days, courses and events, which explore woodlands, trees, wildlife and timber throughout the Forest of Avon. We offer a rich menu of environmental arts, earth education, forest school and woodcrafts. Programmes are tailor made to suit the requirements of each group and can be run as a taster half day workshop, a whole day event or a longer term course.

All Wood School activities are curriculum linked and can be delivered in the context of providing an outdoor woodland classroom to explore literacy, numeracy and other areas of the curriculum.

Savages Wood Project Report

This pioneering project took place in the summer of 2007 and engaged six pre-school children aged three to four with diverse inclusion needs. None of these children had been in a woodland environment prior to this project and several had major behaviour and communication needs which have previously been barriers to family and practitioners taking them to new environments. The project was run for South Gloucestershire Council's Inclusion Support Service and achieved such outstanding results that further forest school initiatives are now being developed throughout the county. TreeWise

TreeWise is on hold at the moment. We are hoping to get it running again for Autumn 2008. In the meantime, if you are interested, please contact us and we will add your details to a mailing list and contact you when we have more information. Email info@forestofavon.org.uk or call 0117 953 2141

TreeWise is a series of training sessions aimed at helping people to learn about trees, woodlands and timber. There are courses for beginners as well as those already interested in or involved with trees and woodlands. The courses run from Autumn through to Spring each year. Most sessions are free, although there are charges for a few and due to great popularity, many courses fill up quickly.

TreeWise courses can include Tree Identification, Tree Planting, Woodland Management (including particular skills such as coppicing), Tree Care, Tree Law, Ancient Trees, Wood Working, and wood craft skills and community involvement.

Please check our Events listings for details of training courses and workdays being run by other organisations in the region.

Forest Education Initiative (FEI)

The Forest of Avon coordinates the Bristol and West Cluster Group of FEI. This group provides a forum for local forest education practitioners, teachers and members of the timber industry to meet together quarterly in order to work together to deliver forest education projects and training which increase awareness and understanding of forestry and woodlands.

The Forest Education Initiative is a partnership between the Forestry Commission, Tree Council, Timber Trade Federation, Woodland Trust and Forestry Industry Development Council.

A Partnership Fund provides matching funding for FEI cluster groups and member organisations. This fund can support applications of up to £10,000. The Bristol and West cluster group has recently secured funding to deliver a forest education training programme for practitioners during 2007 - 2008 and a 'Forest Festival' in the summer of 2008.
