A National Community Forest Partner

What is the Forest?

PhotoThe Forest of Avon is one of 12 Community Forests in England and is part of the National Community Forest Partnership. The Forest Plan sets out the vision and strategy for 50 years. Shorter term targets and priorities are set out in a business plan.
  • The Forest of Avon covers 221 square miles in and around Bristol.
  • 15 million trees are to be planted over the next 40 years, creating a multi-purpose forest offering something for everyone.

Since 1992 we have:

  • Planted a million trees - delivering high quality landscapes and biodiversity and offsetting local carbon
  • Involved thousands of people in creating, managing and using green spaces
  • Created and improved over 1,000 kilometres of paths for walking, cycling, horse riding, commuting and healthy livingPhoto
  • Opened up hundreds of hectares of woodland and wildlife sites for public use
  • Developed the Wood School and TreeWise learning programmes, bringing quality environmental education to hundreds of children and adults
  • Created new business opportunities through the successful Forest of Avon Wood Products Co-operative

Some Extra Facts:

  • The Forest partners have promoted leisure and recreation opportunities through events, publications and campaigns eg Walking to Health.
  • The Forest of Avon is a source of grants for tree planting.
  • The Forest of Avon Wood Products Co-op makes and sells local timber products, developing and expanding businesses whilst supporting the sustainable management of local woodlands.
