The wider picture
Community Forests are improving the environment, assisting economic growth and enhancing people’s health, well-being and quality of life.
The Forest of Avon is one of the 12 Community Forests in England. These were established over 13 years ago around our major cities. They all share common aims, tailored to local circumstances and set out in government approved long -term Forest Plans. Established by the Countryside Agency and the Forestry Commission in partnership with others, much has been achieved already. Thousands of local people have become involved in transforming their local environment through planning, creating and using new open spaces and woodlands. New cycleways and walkways link communities to wildlife areas, woods and water, whilst new business use the new resources to create food, wood products and services for local people and tourists alike.
Community forestry is an approach to regeneration, community involvement and urban growth that can be applied to practically any town or city. National, regional and local policies are promoting community forestry as a real way to help achieve sustainable development.
